Finding The Perfect Workout Partner

I admit, I was that one person who would walk in to the gym with my headphones already on and music blasting just to make sure no one had a chance talk to me. The time I spent at the gym, was MY time. I used that hour and a half as time to get away from the world and concentrate on myself. I didn’t feel the need to share that small piece of my day with someone else. Why workout with someone else when all they will do is slow me down right? I can get a much better workout in with no distractions and having to wait on someone else to complete their set. I seemed to have been stuck in this mindset for the past 4 years until 3 months ago. June, 2016 I finally allowed someone to share that small piece of my day with me.

His name is Caleb Lambert, a Certified NASM Personal trainer at Golds Gym. I had seen him in the months before actually meeting him and always admired his hard work and dedication to the sport. It was rare is me to do such a thing in the first place when I acted as if no one at the gym existed while I was there; But I let him exist. As the days went on, the more and more we would talk about all things fitness. We had the same goals, same passion, and drive. One day, we decided to do the unthinkable…Workout together. It was a huge leap for me. If I would have known how great of a leap of faith this would of been, I would have taken it much sooner than I did.

We decided to do his workout. His workout totally kicked my butt and challenged me in ways I haven’t challenged myself before. It was a huge change of pace from the workouts I was so used to doing. We decided to workout the next day together; I woke up the next day just as sore as the last time. I hadn’t felt that sore in way to long to say the least… Once you get past the stage of hating being sore. You begin to become addicted to the feeling. And I was hooked.

One month passed by and we had worked out every single day of June together. There was no end in sight either. We had always talked about our goals of competing one day. As July rolled around. Those goals became a reality. July 4th, 2016 Caleb and I began our 12 week competition prep for the NPC Baltimore Classic. Caleb, competing in Men’s Classic Physique and I competing in Women’s Figure. Each day, we wake up and tell each other our weight. Each day, we keep each other accountable for our every move in this prep. We are now 6 and a half weeks out and it’s safe to say neither of us have been in the gym without one another either.

Competition prep isn’t easy to say the least. It is without a doubt one of the most challenging things I’ve had to endure; And I’ve been blessed with the constant support, care, and motivation to keep fighting through it by my amazing workout partner. I have never had such an amount of both physical and mental growth until working out with Caleb. The progress I have made speaks for itself. He has completely changed my view on working out with someone. Find that someone who together, you can both push, help, and most importantly pick up each other when one of you falls and point them back in the right direction.

I can’t express the joy and excitement I have to step on stage at the same show with the person that has been willing to do nothing but enjoy the struggle with me. The placing is a bonus; Being equally as involved and excited to watch each other grow is what makes the whole process really worth it.

If you have the mindset I used to have, try to change it for a day or two. Who knows, you might stumble upon you’re own Caleb and your life will instantly change for the better in all aspects like mine did. Happy lifting calls for happy living.
