Toning: Low Weight, High Rep. Right?

Over the years I have had many people mention to me that they want to get “toned” and that they have heard that to do so you use light weight with high rep counts.

If you look up the definition of “toned” you will find this:

toned

adjective
Popularity: Bottom 30% of words

Simple Definition of toned

  • : having or showing strength or firmness

  • : having a certain type of tone or color

So as you see it says that you show strength or firmness which results in having a decent amount of muscle mass. This muscle mass will in turn give your body a more defined appearance.

Now for the wise old saying of low weight, high rep.. This will help to burn fat and give your muscles a pumped up appearance that bodybuilders are constantly striving for. However, to see the muscle definition you must first gain the muscle. Muscle building and strength training involves using heavy weight and lower rep counts with longer rest periods between sets. As you are performing these exercises and lifting the weight, your muscles are being torn. Once the muscles recover they become bigger and stronger. Along with lifting heavy you should be consuming food in a caloric surplus with plenty of protein to aid in building the muscle.

Once you have put on an adequate amount of muscle the low weight, high rep workouts can come into play. With these workouts you should still use a weight that will cause you to fatigue by the last rep, but making sure that the rep range is much higher with shorter rest periods.
